The first Freemasons’ Lodge in Petersfield named the “Lodge of Friendship” was formed in September 1862, some 153 years ago. The Lodge met for over 100 years in the building at the rear of the Red Lion Public House in College Street which was a Coaching Inn in those days. The Lodge of Friendship moved from the Red Lion to its present home in Windsor Road, Petersfield in 1964. There are now nine Lodges that meet at the present building with over 250 Members. Within the Masonic Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight there are 250 Masonic Lodges with over 10,000 Members.

Freemasonry is one of the largest independent organisations throughout the World and is universally known for the support it provides for charities and deserving causes on a local, national and international level. The Lodge of Friendship, along with the other Lodges that meet in Petersfield, continues to support numerous local organisations and charities. In recent times financial assistance has been given to The Rosemary Foundation, Artscape, Petersfield Stroke Support Group, Stepping Stones Playgroup, Homestart, Festival of Young People and many more. Our support for local charities is ongoing. On a national level the Masonic Grand Charity has donated over £60 million since 1981 to non-Masonic Charities to assist for example medical research, vulnerable people and youth opportunities.

Over the years many of the Members of the various Lodges have been local dignitaries, businessmen, schoolmasters, tradesmen, churchmen and those from all other walks of life. This tradition continues today and Freemasonry prides itself on welcoming Members of all ages, creed, nationality and occupation. The aims of Freemasonry are to help other people through charitable work and community service, and to share a concern and respect for human values, moral standards, the laws of society and the rights of individuals.

Freemasonry is now very public facing, despite its historical reputation and provides a convivial meeting place for men who believe in supporting the community and sharing their approach to life with others with similar values.
